There is a housing complex in Berlin where you can only live if you are over 60 or in early retirement. There are almost 100 small one-room flats there - where both women and men live. In very few cases, couples also live there. The housing is self-determined, which means that the residents are self-supporting.

For this photo series, I photographed in this complex for several months. I concentrated mainly on women, because almost only women live in this housing complex. The photos show them in their studio appartments. On these few square metres we find the traces of the past. These tell of eventful lives: Maud, who fled the GDR. Jutta, first a model in America, then a secretary in Berlin. Sabine, who danced with the Sufis in Africa... But we also find the present, because they have redefined the term "home" for themselves. They - mostly at an advanced age - found a new home here and often a new beginning.

The series is called "After Work" because people associate this term with something positive: a sociable, relaxed get-together after a long day at work. Most of us tend to associate the term "retirement" with the opposite. In this series, I am aiming for a more positive approach to the topic of age(ing) and life in retirement.
